What are Periodontics?

People

Periodontics is the specialty of dentistry that studies supporting structures of teeth, as well as diseases and conditions that affect them. The supporting tissues are known as the periodontium, which includes the gingiva (gums), alveolar bone, cementum, and the periodontal ligament. The dentist that specialize in this is called periodontist.

Periodontist are dentistry's experts in treating periodontal disease. They receive up to three additional years of specialized training in periodontal disease treatment in both non-surgical treatments and periodontal plastic surgery procedures. There are different procedures in this area, such as:

  • Non-Surgical Treatments
  • Gum Graft Surgery
  • Laser Treatment
  • Regenerative Procedures
  • Dental Crown Lengthening
  • Dental Implants
  • Pocket Reduction Procedures
  • Plastic Surgery Procedure
But The most common periodontal diseases are gingivitis and periodontitis, Gingivitis (gum inflammation) usually precedes periodontitis (gum disease). However, it is important to know that not all gingivitis progresses to periodontitis.

In the early stage of gingivitis, bacteria in plaque buildup, causing the gums to become inflamed and to easily bleed during tooth brushing. Although the gums may be irritated, the teeth are still firmly planted in their sockets. No irreversible bone or other tissue damage has occurred at this stage.

When gingivitis is left untreated, it can advance to periodontitis. In a person with periodontitis, the inner layer of the gum and bone pull away from the teeth and form pockets. These small spaces between teeth and gums collect debris and can become infected. The body's immune system fights the bacteria as the plaque spreads and grows below the gum line. When this happens, teeth are no longer anchored in place, they become loose, and tooth loss occurs. Gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults.

Treatments

The gingivitis may be cured with a deep dental cleaning ,while the periodontitis would need a scaling and root planning treatment ,to remove the plaque and calculus(tartar) from deep periodontal pockets and smooth the root to remove bacteria toxins., The ongoing maintenance and frequent dental cleanings and controls would be the key to success on the fighting of a periodontal condition patient.
