Bruxism is a condition in which you grind, gnash or clench your teeth. This condition is usually unconscious, and more frequently during sleep (nights), in some patient’s bruxism may occur awake (awake bruxism).
Mental disorders, anxiety, stress and adverse psychosocial factors are significantly related to tooth grinding during sleep and it has been found that nearly 70% of bruxism occurs as a result of stress or anxiety. Bruxism may lead to jaw disorders, headaches, damaged teeth, neck pain and other problems.
Mild bruxism may not require treatment. The majority of cases of bruxism are treated by the dentist with a custom made hard night guard. In extreme cases Botox may be applied by a specialist to reduce the power of the masseter muscle.
